Early Days
At the institutional hub of Indian cricket, the Shivaji Park Gymkhana in Mumbai, Pravin Amre spotted a boy, not even in his teens, timing strokes against pacers twice his height off the front foot and the back foot. He nailed the cover drives and pulls with equal disdain and immediately caught the eye. This raw and evident talent was honed by the keen eye of Pravin Amre after this.
The Grind of Domestic Cricket
Having decimated bowling attacks in his college days, Iyer found a spot in the Under-19 World Cup of 2014. After a lackluster performance on the slow-ish tracks, Iyer was sent to play for the Trent Bridge cricket team in England. With the ball coming on to the bat, Iyer took full toll and shot to the limelight, scoring 297 runs in 3 innings at a Bradman-esque average of 99.
Rise in International Cricket
Shreyas got his ODI debut in 2017 against Sri Lanka but he was not able to get regular opportunities in the team. Post the 2019 World Cup, he was given regular chances to cement his spot at No.4 in the team. He also scored a century against New Zealand in New Zealand. Injuries also hampered his form and performances as he had a back surgery in the lead up to the World Cup in 2023. His spot was not guaranteed but he was selected in the Indian World Cup squad once he was declared 100% fit. In the 2023 World Cup, he ended up with 530 runs which is the highest runs for a batter batting at No.4 position.
IPL Journey
He was picked up by Delhi Daredevils in 2015 for a whopping 2.6 crores from a base of 10 lakhs. He became the highest-earning uncapped player in the 2015 auction. He scored 439 runs in the tournament which earned him the Emerging Player of the Tournament award as he displayed his aggressive style of play. In 2018, he led the team for the 1st time after Gautam Gambhir left the captaincy. He was named full time captain after Delhi Daredevils was rechristened to Delhi Capitals and he led them to the final of IPL 2020 where they lost to Mumbai Indians. In 2022, he was again back in the auction pool where KKR picked him for 12.25 crores and KKR named him the skipper straightaway.
