The ICC ranking is a rating system run by the International Cricket Council that scores every active international cricketer based on their recent performances. Each batter, bowler and all-rounder has a number out of a possible 1,000 points in each format — Test, ODI and T20I — and the rankings are simply those scores sorted highest to lowest. The current world No. 1 in any list is the player with the most rating points in that format and category.

Each performance is given points based on the strength of the opposition, the match conditions and the result. Recent performances are weighted more heavily than older ones, so form moves a player faster than career numbers alone. A century against the No. 1 team on a tough pitch earns far more than the same score against a weak attack at home.

The world No. 1 changes by format and category — there is one No. 1 batter, one No. 1 bowler and one No. 1 all-rounder in each of Test, ODI and T20I, for both men and women. Rankings refresh within 24 hours of any international match in that format. During World Cups and major bilateral series, the top 10 in ODI and T20I can change after almost every match. Test rankings move slower because Tests are played less frequently and a single five-day match swings more points than a T20I.

An all-rounder’s rating is the product of their batting and bowling rating points, divided by 1,000. A player needs to be strong with both bat and ball — being world-class with only one is not enough to break into the top tier.
